Meet Team TIS Monthly Profile – Bill Wilson!

By Sheila Feldman Buckmaster

It was very simple. Behind Bill Wilson’s decision to become part of Team TIS revolved around his admiration and respect for the organization. “I believe in the people of TIS,” he says, “staff and guests both.” In 2022 he joined the TIS team as one of the organization’s 250-or-so volunteers. For starters, Bill’s skills as a paramedic for more than two decades and an American Heart Association instructor—plus his big heart—spelled a background just right for the shelter.

A year after joining the organization’s ranks, Bill became a TIS House Supervisor, thus ensuring that his presence would help further the shelter’s mission of being “dedicated to fighting homelessness on Maryland’s Mid-Shore by providing Shelter, Stability, Support, and a path to Success for families and individuals in need.” That strong belief comes with TIS’ vision that no one in our community will ever have to spend a night on the streets, in a car, or in the woods because they cannot find housing.

“Under [Executive Director] Julie Lowe’s leadership,” Bill shares, “TIS has become something wonderful! People clearly benefit from their time here.” During their residency at the shelter, guests perform chores, learn social and financial skills, and get help finding and holding jobs.

Sense of purpose aside, Bill has a personality that just won’t quit. Known for his inability to sit still, “He always finds something to do here.” Says Jesse Johnson, former TIS Volunteer Coordinator.

Besides, He’s hilarious,” she shares.

“I don’t know a single person who doesn’t like Bill.” She continues. How can you not enjoy someone who is inherently funny? “He can turn any conversation into a laughing fest.”

Bill always finds something to do at TIS. Whether that involves using a broom to get cobwebs from the ceiling to cleaning up the yard when his shift is already over, he’s always at the ready to lend a hand.

“Bill’s a staff member and yet he continues to also volunteer,” Jesse says. “He consistently goes above and beyond for TIS and the staff. He’s a joy to work with and I always look forward to seeing him.”

“He’s an incredible guy who does so much for us,” says Laura Richeson, TIS Director of Development and Marketing. “We are blessed to have him on the team.”

Forever humble, Bill cuts to the chase: “I enjoy seeing those in need make progress.” Yes, it is that simple.

Talbot Interfaith Shelter is always on the look out for volunteers to join Team TIS. If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved, email new Volunteer Coordinator, Ray, at RRich-Vines@talbotinterfaithshelter.org.
