Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month
November is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. Join Team TIS as we work to educate our community about the challenges our neighbors experience right here on the Mid-Shore and raise funds and supplies to support our guests.
Homelessness Looks Different on the Eastern Shore
On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, homelessness rarely looks the way most people picture it. Here, among waterfront towns and open farm fields in one of the state’s most affluent regions, it’s easy to miss. In rural communities, homelessness doesn’t usually mean a sidewalk encampment. It looks like a family sleeping in the car after a shift, or a grandmother moving from one relative’s couch to the next. It’s a worker who can’t catch up after a layoff, or a teenager doing homework in a motel room. These are our neighbors. They ring up our groceries, care for our aging parents, and sit beside our children in class. And more of them are seeking help every year, with more than 300 families and individuals on the Talbot Interfaith Shelter waitlist right now.
