September Letter from the Executive Director, Julie Lowe

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As the leaves begin to turn and a crispness settles into the evening air, I am reminded of how beautiful—and how profound—the changing of seasons can be. Autumn always brings a sense of transition, a quiet shifting of energy that invites us to reflect on where we have been and where we are going.

Here at Talbot Interfaith Shelter, this season is felt most vibrantly through the energy of the children in our care. Over the past few weeks, our shelter has been a whirlwind of new backpacks, fresh school supplies, and the nervous excitement of going back to school. Watching our younger guests catch the bus and hearing the older kids talk about their classes reminds me daily of why we do this work. Education is a vital stepping stone toward the lasting stability we strive to give every family who walks through our doors. Even in the midst of homelessness, these resilient kids are stepping forward into their futures with determination and hope.

While my heart is always with our shelter family, many of you have noticed my physical absence over the last several weeks. I want to share a deeply personal update regarding my own family. My husband, Mark, was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He underwent surgery to have the tumor removed, and yet there continue to be complications. The decisions that need to be made every day for his current and forthcoming care have taken us on quite the roller coaster ride.

Stepping away from the daily operations of the shelter during such a critical season has been incredibly difficult, but my place right now must be by Mark’s side. Please know that Talbot Interfaith Shelter remains in the most capable and compassionate hands. Our staff, board, and dedicated volunteers have stepped up beautifully to ensure that our guests—especially our children—never experience a gap in the love, shelter, and circle of support they depend on.

I am profoundly grateful for the privacy, grace, and endless kindness this community has extended to Mark and me during the most difficult chapter of our lives. Your thoughts, prayers, and continued dedication to the shelter mean more to me than words can express.

As we embrace the changes this season brings, thank you for continuing to stand by our shelter, our families, and my own family.

With deep gratitude,

Julie Lowe
