It’s the first Team TIS Tuesday of 2024! We are starting the new year off with a BIG milestone for our organization… 15 years ago this week, we opened our doors for the first time! We started as a rotating cold-weather shelter, serving 5 people at a time with the assistance of our incredible local faith community. Six congregations hosted our guests, and many other partner congregations provided volunteers for our “homeless” homeless shelter.
15 years later, we have TWO permanent shelter facilities and 16 off-site transitional apartments, and are able to serve more than 50 people at a time. We owe it all to the people in the photo below – the original TIS Steering Committee, led by our tenacious and compassionate founder, Evelyn Sedlack. Also pictured here are Lisa Menditch, our amazing Executive Director, Julie Lowe, John Hobson, Kim White, and Lorry Hoffman of Mid-Shore Mental Health Systems. Because of these extraordinary people, and the equally extraordinary volunteers and hosts who started it all, hundreds of our neighbors have been able to avoid homelessness and rebuild their lives. We could not be more grateful!
The Star Democrat article from December of 2008 announcing our opening is included here. We hope you’ll take a moment to read it!
