August Letter from the Executive Director, Julie Lowe

Dear Friends of TIS,

We all go through seasons when life gets messy and overwhelming. Whether it is an unexpected bill, a health scare, or losing someone we love, tough times hit everyone eventually. During those moments, having a safe, stable place to crash and catch your breath makes all the difference.

For the families at Talbot Interfaith Shelter, that safety net is completely gone. Dealing with life’s normal curveballs is hard enough, but doing it without a home is a whole different level of trauma. This reality is toughest on the youngest faces here  –  our kids.

Losing a home is incredibly traumatic for a child. It is not just about missing their own bedroom. It completely disrupts the routine and predictability they need to feel safe and grow. Kids navigating homelessness have unique, urgent needs that we have to step up and meet:

  • A Sense of Safety: The constant stress of not knowing where they will sleep can lead to deep anxiety and fear. They need extra emotional support and counseling to feel secure again.
  • School Help: Changing schools or living out of a suitcase makes it incredibly easy to fall behind. They need dedicated tutoring, school supplies, and quiet places to study.
  • Healthy Meals and Healthcare: Without a stable kitchen or routine doctor visits, kids are much more vulnerable to getting sick and missing milestones.
  • Time to Just Be Kids: Underneath all these adult-sized worries, they desperately need safe spaces to play, laugh, and forget their troubles for a little while.

Here at TIS, we do way more than just hand over a set of keys. We wrap these kids and their parents in a huge circle of support, from tutoring to mental health resources. Our goal is to break this cycle for good and give every child a solid foundation.

This summer, we asked our community to stand with families facing homelessness, and so many of you answered. Your generosity provides shelter, meals, case management, and the stability our families need to rebuild their lives — and it goes beyond financial gifts, from our volunteers to our meal teams to our advocates.

We truly cannot do this without you. Thank you for being part of Team TIS, and for helping give children the chance to feel safe, hopeful, and excited about their futures.
