EASTON — More than 450 people attended the Talbot Interfaith Shelter’s annual Lip Sync Battle on Saturday, helping the nonprofit meet its goal of fundraising $150,000.

The Lip Sync Battle is one of many fundraiser events the Talbot Interfaith Shelter holds. The shelter’s mission centers on fighting homelessness by providing shelter, support and a path to success for families and individuals in need.

Executive Director Julie Lowe says the funds raised account for around 10% of the nonprofit’s yearly budget.

“It is an incredible help to our mission, but it’s always also a friend-raiser, so people in the community can learn more about Talbot Interfaith Shelter,” Lowe said. “We have a mission moment during the event, and it just brings more friends into the fold.”

Lowe said she’s very excited the shelter hit its goal of $150,000, which will help the organization continue to thrive.

“It is so exciting. We are exhausted, but very pleased with the turnout and very pleased with the community feedback and all the people who were in the event, the participants,” Lowe said.

This year was the first year the Talbot County Community Center hosted the Lip Sync Battle. Lowe credited the large attendance from the community for the reason of needing a bigger location.

The event featured 22 teams in two categories: live and video. Eastern Shore Brewing won the video contest and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Kappa Theta Omega chapter won the live portion.

Ten new teams were entered this year, including the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office.

“The deputies at the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office are excited to join the Lip Sync Battle,” Sheriff Joe Gamble said in a press release prior to Saturday’s event. “We are proud to help raise funds and awareness for Talbot Interfaith Shelter, supporting neighbors who need a safe place and a fresh start.”

Tickets sold out for the event at the Community Center. Hundreds more watched the live stream of the competition, as some gathered at Eastern Shore Brewing in St. Michaels for a second annual watch party.

“Everybody was very happy,” Lowe said. “I got so many comments about what a good event it was.”
